In 1968, amidst the vibrant streets of Istanbul, Yonca Müzik emerged as a crucible for musical innovation. Founded by Ergin Bener, the label became a sanctuary where Western rock rhythms intertwined with the rich tapestry of Turkish folk melodies, giving birth to the distinctive genre known as Turkish Psychedelia.
Among the artists nurtured by Yonca Müzik were Mazhar ve Fuat, who later evolved into the renowned trio MFÖ, often likened to the Beatles of Turkey. Their debut album, “Türküz Türkü Çağırırız,” released in 1971, holds the distinction of being the country’s first stereo vinyl record. This pioneering work not only topped charts but also became a cultural touchstone, influencing generations of musicians.
The label’s influence extended beyond music into the realm of cinema. Yonca Müzik’s catalog became the heartbeat of Turkish films, especially comedies, where its melodies underscored narratives and etched themselves into the collective memory of audiences.
However, the late 1970s brought challenges. Governmental restrictions threatened to stifle the burgeoning Turkish Psychedelia movement. Yet, the spirit of Yonca Müzik endured, kept alive by vinyl collectors and underground enthusiasts who refused to let these innovative sounds fade into obscurity. The digital renaissance of the 2000s further rekindled interest, with bands like Altın Gün, Khruangbin, Glass Beams and likes drawing inspiration from this rich legacy.
Recognizing the timeless significance of Yonca Müzik, Parydise Music Network is dedicated to revitalizing the label’s extensive catalog. Plans are underway to release the entire collection, including unreleased tracks and demos, and to collaborate with contemporary producers for remixes and re-sampling. This initiative also encompasses launching podcasts, live recordings, and a docu-series centered around the Yonca catalog. Re-mastered versions and Dolby Atmos mixes are in development to enhance the listening experience, revealing previously obscured details in these iconic tracks.
